Creating Her Future: Abbie’s Rise from Volunteer to Employee
Abbie is a third-year learner at Trinity Specialist College who has shown a clear talent for anything creative, alongside a strong interest in working in a café environment. With this in mind, Café Ceramica in Sutton Coldfield proved to be an ideal work placement, combining both hospitality and an artistic setting.
Abbie began her placement around 18 months ago, initially attending for two hours per week with support. As she grew more confident and familiar with the role, she gradually increased her independence and now attends for four hours per week without support. Her motivation and enthusiasm have been particularly evident, especially when she independently contacted the café during half term to ask if she could work an additional shift—a request the café were delighted to approve. Throughout her time there, Abbie has developed a range of practical and interpersonal skills, and her confidence has continued to shine through. The owner and manager have expressed how pleased they are with her dedication, reliability, and the quality of her work, and they have offered her employment once she leaves college. Abbie’s journey highlights the progress she has made and the positive impact of a well-matched work placement in supporting her future aspirations.
