Nicky’s Career Journey: From Barista Dreams to Retail Success
Nicky joined Trinity Specialist College in 2023 with a clear goal in mind to pursue a career as a Barista. With a strong interest in customer service and a genuine enthusiasm for working in a café environment, Nicky was eager to build the practical skills and experience needed to succeed in the world of work.
To help him achieve his goal, Nicky began a weekly work placement at The Olive Branch café in Sutton Coldfield. This hands-on experience allowed him to step into a real working environment where he could begin to develop his independence, build confidence, and learn valuable hospitality and employability skills.
During his placement, Nicky became actively involved in a range of duties, from helping prepare and serve hot drinks to maintaining a clean and welcoming café environment. He also developed key soft skills such as communication, teamwork, timekeeping, and customer interaction. Over time, he became more self-reliant and increasingly confident in carrying out his responsibilities.
Nicky’s consistent effort and dedication did not go unnoticed. As his work ethic and professionalism continued to grow, he was recognised by college and placement staff as someone with real potential. As a result, he was put forward as a perfect candidate for a Supported Internship opportunity with Asda Minworth, delivered in partnership with BMet College and DFN Project SEARCH. This internship will allow Nicky to continue building his employability, gaining valuable experience in a larger, fast-paced retail environment, broadening his career horizons and skill set.
Nicky’s journey shows the impact of combining real-world experience with the right support. With his positive attitude, growing confidence, and strong work ethic, he is well on his way to achieving long-term success in the retail and customer service sector.
